Summary

An RPG of sorts, the sequel to JoWood's popular Etherlords - imaginatively titled Etherlords II - is very similar to the original offering released in 2002. But the rule of "if it ain't broke, don't fix it", which applies in so many instances, also applies here. The original game was popular enough, its sequel will be too.

Gameplay in Etherlords II can be easily divided into two well-known styles - strategic and tactical. The former playing style has in fact been radically altered from that in the first Etherlords, whereby players must take into consideration a greater number of factors before making advances on the battlefield. The change affects some of the tasks at hand considerably, but does little to alter the game as a whole. The tactical aspect of Etherlords II remains largely the same as it did before. You still have to defeat all enemies and survive any other perils you are faced with along the way.

You'll be armed with the knowledge of magic as you face your opponents, and discovering their greatest weakness as quickly as possible is often what makes the difference in battle. Play with caution and you’ll do just fine.

The fantasy locations are among the best looking for the PC platform, brilliantly conveying the developers' imagination. Environments are presented in full 3D, and are wonderfully vibrant.

With five massive campaigns, literally hundreds of spells and combinations, and a broad selection of new monsters and fiends, Etherlords II is a great follow up to a great game.
