Developer Fishtank Games is quite well known in mainland Europe, and with an eye to making a dent in the UK market, they've teamed up with European publisher JoWood to bring us Etherlords, a PC RPG of epic variety.
In the fictitious world of Etherlords, everything (breathable air, plant life, animal life, minerals) begins as the raw material of existence, Ether. And once this life ends, it is returned back to its original state and so the circle of existence is maintained. But the World of the Lords has ability to influence the flow of Ether, and so they reign supreme. You must live within this chaotic world... and survive.
In similar fashion to Squares Final Fantasy XI, Etherlords allows players to choose characters from one of four races. Each race has its own realm, unique attributes and combat style, so depending on your preferences, the game can be played in four different ways.
Battling with any of 300 potent magic spells and weapons, you must obliterate over 100 types of computer-controlled bad guys in a quest to become the ultimate Etherlords veteran. Online functionality also enables players to combat each other or participate co-operatively in a series of highly technical and strategic battle situations.
Etherlords is a hardcore RPG that puts itself alongside legendary series such as Ultima and Everquest. A great game, but maybe for enthusiasts only.
