Founded in 1987 by Will Wright and investor Jeff Braun, Maxis hit the ground running with its first title, SimCity, and with that game set a new standard for the "God game" genre. In 1997 it was acquired by Electronic Arts, becoming a wholly owned subsidiary. In 2000 the Maxis brand rekindled its early success, and again reset the "God game" standard with the record breaking The Sims - a series that has spawned numerous sequels, variations and add-ons.
Maxis's first work that SPOnG is aware of is the 1987 title, "Sim City" (PC).
The company has been involved titles released on the PS4, Xbox One, PC, Wii, DS/DSi, PS2, Power Mac, PSP, Xbox, GameCube, GBA, PlayStation, Amiga, Mac, C64, Spectrum 48K and Amstrad CPC. Of these, "The Sims 2" (PC), "Sim City 3000" (PC), "The Sims" (PC), "The Sims Unleashed" (PC), "The Sims 2: Open For Business" (PC) has been a best selling title.
The company's most recent involvement was on the 2019 release "The Sims 4: Island Living" (Mac).
