Summary
The Legend of Heroes series isn't one of the big names among JRPGs in the West, but a series of outings on systems like the PSVita has given it a bit of a cult following among a certain set of fans. The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel II picks up the epic saga on the PlayStation 4!
One month has passed since the events of the first Trails of Cold Steel game and class seven, the heroes of the last game, find themselves scattered across Erebonia and the country is deep in civil war. Rean finds himself in the mountains but vows to reunite with his classmates and find a place for himself both in the war and in the world.
While this is very much a continuation of the story started in the first game, newcomers are catered for with a 'backstory' option that gives you an in-depth account of what happened first time around.
While this does follow on from Trails of Cold Steel in a lot of ways, however, one of the biggest changes here is that this is not a school simulation. Instead, you'll find yourself exploring the wider world of Erebonia as you take on missions and progress.
New transport will, in keeping with the bigger map, enable you to travel fast over land and air and join up with fellow Thors attendees who are scattered across the map.
One of the strongest features of the last game returns in the form of the Link System. By building bonds between characters you can reap benefits in combat, including healing, guarding and more. It's been taken up a notch, however, with Overdrive Mode - a feature that enables linked characters to attack as many as three times in a row for fresh options in battle.
