Summary

Persona 5 is, as the title kind of gives away, the fifth installment in the Persona series. That's pretty good going for any series, but as a spin-off of the Megami Tensei franchise. It's been a while coming, though. Originally announced in 2013 for a 2014 release, it took until 2017 to make it to Western PlayStations in the end. But, arrive it did, and hopefully it will prove worth it.

The game takes place in a real-world Tokyo, but one that's (as far as we know) a little different to the one you might have visited. As well as having a pretty standard high school life, the heroes of Persona have supernatural adventures thanks to their power to enter the hearts of others. In Persona 5 the Phantom Thieves, our game's heroes, attempt to help the world by stealing ill intent from the hearts of adults, using manifestations of their psyches called personas. The game brings together role-playing elements with social simulation, a hefty dose of dungeon exploration and, as players have come to expect, plenty of weirdness.

A day/night cycle dictates whether you'll be getting on with social stuff (daytime) or the stranger stuff (nighttime), but whether you're stalking through dungeons or developing relationships with your classmates, it all feeds back together into a deep, weird experience that could only have come out of a Japanese development studio.
