Summary
Nintendo’s 3DS handheld brings full augmented reality to a veritable gaming classic, Tetris. There is multiplayer mode against friends and family, there are races against the clock in Fever mode; there are exploding blocks, and there is the ability to use the Tetriminos in full augmented reality.
Tetris for the Nintendo 3DS comes with 20 game modes including the famously taxing (and fun) Marathon mode in which the player competes against themself and those Tetriminos blocks for as long as he or she can survive their ever more devilish advances.
The addition of Augmented Reality (AR) in which the real world can – via the 3DS camera – be used as part of the game itself – means that really modern modes are included. The player simply drops an AR card in front of them, and the game comes to life via the 3DS.
Party modes have been added into the mix with fun sub-games such as Fit, where the player must squeeze blocks into specifically shaped holes. Then there’s Bombliss Plus, where the gamer has to use bombs in order to explode blocks that emerge not from above in classic Tetris style but from below. Capture is another party mode. This time the players must use strategy to cover stars on both sides of the Matrix with Tetriminos. Another mode is Jigsaw, which as the name suggests means that the player has to solve picture puzzles – but there’s a twist as the ability import their own pictures is also included.
Online is also catered for using the 3DS’s SpotPass system, with the fast-paced Fever mode meaning that friends can play at once.
Other multiplayer options including five Local Multiplayer modes and three Download Play modes designed for up to eight people to enjoy at one time are part of the game’s experience. To really get others involved, the Download Play multiplayer modes only need one Game Card for everybody to enjoy.
Finally, players can extend their reach beyond the immediate area using the 3DS’s Internet functionality and playing in World Battle and Friend Battle game modes.
