Summary

The Dungeons and Dragons engine, eh? It's quite possible that this smart little piece of computer programming is responsible for the rise of the online RPG. Atari's Ultimate Dungeons and Dragons is a compilation of RPG games for the PC featuring: Neverwinter Nights, Neverwinter Nights: The Shadows of Undrentide, Neverwinter Nights: The Hordes of the Underdark, Baldur's Gate, Baldur's Gate: Tales of the Sword Coast, Baldur's Gate 2, Baldur's Gate 2: Throne of Bhaal, Icewind Dale, Icewind Dale: Heart of Winter, Icewind Dale 2, Demon Stone, Dragonshard and Temple of Elemental Evil.

In Neverwinter Nights, a hideous evil has awoken in the Forgotten Realms. Now, in order to save the inhabitants of the town of Neverwinter, you must uncover a sinister conspiracy, unmask your mysterious betrayer and complete an epic struggle to defeat the powerful forces that look to halt your quest and unleash an evil your people would surely never survive.

Neverwinter Nights: The Shadows of Undrentide is an expansion pack for Neverwinter Nights. In Shadows of Undrentide, players can begin their adventures in the small mountain town of Hilltop as a student under the tutelage of a mage named Drogan, before traversing the deadly Anauroch Desert in search of the ancient ruins of Netheril. Players must again uncover a fiendish plot whilst battling a multitude of new enemies through over 20 hours of original, new gameplay.

Neverwinter Nights: The Hordes of the Underdark is an unusually large expansion pack, and much more extensive than previous add-on, Shadows of Undrentide. This new addition boasts an additional 20-30 hours of RPG gaming, but caters mostly for the advanced Neverwinter gamer, offering 'Epic' gameplay that allows for more powerful players and formidable foes such as devils, demons and dragons.

Baldur's Gate is a non-linear adventure that spreads across an enormous 10,000 scrolling environments. Each of the environments consists of hundreds of landmark buildings, such as castles, arenas and brothels, and boasts high levels of detail. When playing through this enormous adventure you will acquire all kinds of magic and weapons that must be used wisely to make progress. Magic is expendable and weapons are not in abundance, so be careful.

Baldur's Gate: Tales of the Sword Coast is an add-on of the previous game. In a desperate rush to seek safety within the walls of Baldur's Gate, your hopes are dashed when you and your family are ambushed on the road by a group of thieves, who abduct your sister. You must find her...before whatever terrible plots involving her unfold.

Baldur's Gate 2 is much darker than its predecessor. You have been captured and imprisoned with some of your fellow adventurers. You must escape to Amn and travel to Athkatla to unravel the secrets of being the son of the God of Murder!

In the expansion Baldur's Gate 2: Throne of Bhaal, you must return to Baldur's Gate 2 and unravel the mysteries of a dangerous new dungeon - Watcher's Keep. You must explore unseen lands, encounter fierce villains, and gain powerful high-level abilities as you achieve your ultimate destiny - Baldur's Gate 2: Throne of Bhaal.

In Icewind Dale, you must battle your way through hordes of evil monstrosities and explore as if you were Sherlock Holmes. To do this, you must put together hundreds of locations, spells, weapons, characters, magic, monsters and legends.

In Icewind Dale: Heart of Winter, players can once again become lost in the mesmerising world of Advanced Dungeons and Dragons. However, the enemies that you must fight in Heart of Winter are much trickier than in Icewind Dale.

In Icewind Dale 2, the call has gone out across the Sword Coast; the Ten-Towns of Icewind Dale are paying handsomely for mercenaries, soldiers, and adventurers of all types to sail north and defend the town of Targos from the encroaching goblinoid hordes. An unknown power is attempting to force the Ten-Towns to bow to their will. You and your stalwart band of would-be heroes must find out who or what is behind this and stop them at all costs. The game features all new character classes, such as the Barbarian, Monk and Sorcerer.

Demon Stone is a story penned by best-selling author R.A. Salvatore. The game's three characters unwittingly release two enormous opposing demonic armies, and must set about getting rid of them without further ado. In true RPG style, the characters have access to a whole host of skill upgrades, combo moves, weapons and armour.

Dragonshard is set in the all-new world of Eberron, where players must take command of enormous armies. The game is an innovative blend of fantasy RPG gameplay and real time strategy. Dragonshard should get D&D fans, and all fantasy fans for that matter, very excited indeed.

Temple of Elemental Evil is set in the realm of Greyhawk. When the Temple was torched in an epic battle many years ago, it was eventually forgotten, fading to a distant memory. Until now, as a new threat begins to rear its ugly head for another bout of good versus evil. Gamers must follow the guidelines of the Advanced Dungeons and Dragons 3.5 'ruleset' as you command a team of five playable characters and three followers through a vast game world.

Ultimate Dungeons and Dragons is a compilation that represents extremely good value for money. If you are a fan of either the world of Advanced Dungeons and Dragons or RPG games, get your fix with this package. If you are a fan of both genres, then all your Christmases have come at once!
