Summary

Fans of the Metal Gear Solid series are very likely to rejoice when they get their hands on this game. Coming with three discs, this fatter-than-the-average PS2 game package is a bounty of delights.

Disc one contains 'Subsistence', a re-release of 2004's 'Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater'. Rather than going down the simple route of repackaging the game, Konami has taken the time to update it, introducing the new 3D camera system as used in Metal Gear Solid 4 on Playstation 3. Snake Eater throws you into a Russian jungle in 1964. The game serves as a prequel to the original Metal Gear titles released in the late 1980s. As is the staple of Metal Gear games, you're tasked with achieving goals while avoiding being spotted. In a change from hiding behind crates and lurking in darkened corridors, the jungle brings its own challenges. Disturbing the fauna, such as alligators, snakes and birds, will cause them to attack or flee, both equally likely to give away your location as you crawl gently through the undergrowth. With the option to change camouflage and face paint, you can improve your ability to blend in with surroundings. And as times get rough and your energy wanes, you can kill animals to survive.

The second disc - entitled Persistence - contains an online version of Snake Eater. Alongside the typical multiplayer games, Deathmatch and Team Deathmatch, Rescue Mission (king of the hill) and Capture Mission (capture the flag) is the Sneaking Mission. This game pits one player - acting as Snake - against many others in a battle to covertly steal microfilm and take it safely to the extraction point.

In addition to online, the second disc contains a set of comical 'Snake versus Monkeys' mini-games, featuring the mischievous primates from Ape Escape. Probably most important for the Metal Gear fans is the inclusion of faithful recreations of the original MSX versions of Metal Gear and Metal Gear 2: Snake. Previously only released in Japan, these 2D, flick-screen games wonderfully demonstrate the sneak 'em up fundamentals of the series, and on their own stand as great games - an rare occurrence with games nearing their 20th birthday.

The last disc - Existence - is one for the Metal Gear hardcore. Featuring an edited version of the cinematics from MGS3 Snake Eater, this movie provides an opportunity to go hands-off and sit back and watch the story behind the whole game - perfect for those who like to read the last chapter of a book before the first, or anyone that wants to see where the story goes but is having trouble reaching the end of the game.
