Summary

Rayman first made an appearance back in 1995, on PlayStation and Jaguar amongst other consoles. The game, from French company Ubisoft, followed the strange large-nosed character whose hands, feet and head don’t appear to be joined together. The game harked back to an earlier time still, being a side scrolling platform game, and its colourful graphics and glorious surreal backgrounds were an antidote in an industry where in many quarters the first - often quite clumsy - steps were being taken into three dimensions.

Rayman made a return in 2001, this time in a 3D action adventure game on N64, PS2, Dreamcast and pretty much everything else. His brief was to rescue creatures imprisoned on his home planet by space pirates. As far as GBA goes, he first appeared in Rayman Advance, a glorious-looking platform romp in which Rayman had to rescue his planet’s energy source, the Great Protoon, from the nefarious plottings of the devilish Mr. Dark. A port of the PlayStation original, the game - released early in the handheld’s lifetime - really showed off its 16-bit abilities.

Now he’s back. In Rayman: Hoodlum’s Revenge, the action has gone pseudo 3D, in the isometric style that will be familiar to many owners of the console. Rayman can jump, climb, and hover with his helicopter hair. And must work his way through a series of levels by collecting Lums and finding switches to flick, and rescuing his imprisoned friends from the clutches of fiendish space pirates, who are trying to over-run his planet. Hot on the heels of the release of the DS version, this all-new game makes an intriguing addition to the Rayman series.
