Summary

Despite the limited technology of the GBA, 3D games have become a much-loved aspect of Nintendo's handheld, particularly in the old racing genre. But some believe the console to be better suited to a more traditional racing perspective, as is demonstrated in Zoo's Racing Gears Advance.

Old-school in both appearance and its control method, tournaments or indeed any other racing events are played from an isometric point-of-view that's not too different from certain Micro Machines offerings. Fortunately though, the lack of 3D gaming makes way for some beautifully rendered and distinct racing locales. There are 25 racing circuits all told, accommodating a diverse range of terrains and varying weather.

To play, Racing Gears Advance is a pleasure. It hones the standard racing control method, and the isometric perspective means that the GBA's digital controls don't hinder gameplay in any way. Furthermore, a number of licensed vehicles and the ability to tweak and upgrade components affords a play mechanic that rarely becomes repetitive. The modification of cars alters the driving experience, and so players must learn to adapt accordingly.

Finally, there's the multi-player aspect of Racing Gears Advance. Honing your skills against up to three others, the multi-player game is far less predictable and more exciting, bringing not only great gameplay, but a real sense of longevity too.

While not the most advanced or sophisticated of the racing genre, its old-school play mechanic is great fun and second to none.
