Summary

The Devil May Cry series has become something of a staple on the PS2. Developed in-house by Capcom, the first game cast the player as Dante, a private investigator of the supernatural. It seems that 2000 years ago a demon rebelled against the devil in a bid to help mankind. Dante holds within him the ancient demonic power to repel the devil himself, who is rallying his forces to attack the earth once more. Charging his power as he went, the third-person action title saw Dante wielding his sword and twin pistols, Ebony and Ivory, with plenty of pleasingly balletic and violent special attacks, fighting huge and terrifying monsters in the bowels of Hell. This not being enough to defeat the very Devil, Dante also had to collect special weapons with elemental powers that would give him the powerful special attacks he would undoubtedly need.

Devil May Cry 2 featured more adventures of the powerful demon slayer. All the old skills were present, supplemented by new ones including the ability to run along walls, flying kicks, and multi-directional shooting. Dante’s Devil Trigger, by which he was able to control his supernatural attacks, was improved for the sequel, and the game also featured a new character, Lucia, whose special skill was with the knife.

Now Dante returns in Devil May Cry 3. Or rather he already has, as the game is in fact a prequel, set before the first game, with an involving plotline following the clash of Sparda’s twin sons. This time instead of being lumbered with the same weapons, players can customise Dante’s weapons and fighting styles, choosing from a selection of firearms and swords. The elegant graphics and animations that characterised the game make a return as well, looking better than ever before, and the game is doubtless on the shopping list of many a fan of the Devil May Cry series.
