Summary

Developed by From Software, the original Otogi on Xbox cast the player as Raikoh, a legendary undead warrior protecting feudal Japan from attack by demons led by the evil Michizane, in a literal action-slash-adventure featuring hordes of enemies, high-paced gameplay and destructible scenery.

Now the same development house offers a sequel, and Raikoh is joined by five more warriors, who have sacrificed their lives so that they too can join him as guardians against the continuing demonic onslaught. Naturally they all have differing abilities, strengths and weaknesses, and the player must choose the character most suitable for each of the 27 levels. One for example, Kintoki, is able to pick up and throw enemies, adding a dynamic not seen in the title’s first outing. In addition to this, items and experience points must be picked up to increase each character’s strength and ability to help the player as they progress further through the game.

Unlike the original, Otogi 2 features two game modes: a Story Mode, which promises several different endings, and Havoc Mode, which is even more focused on hacking and slashing. Such gameplay was a trademark of the first game and Otogi 2 is no different, with the emphasis firmly on large numbers of enemies on screen at once and scenery which reacts to the rampaging of the player characters.
