Summary

Over the past decade or so, respected developer Capcom has earned a deal of respect for its beat-em-ups and survival horror ventures, but its also true to say that the company isn't shy when it comes to experimenting in genres it has little or no experience with. And one such 'experiment' is the point-and-click adventure Glass Rose for PlayStation 2.

Such games as Glass Rose are scarce for Sony's console, and the market for these games is becoming smaller thanks to punters wanting a little more visceral action. But don't let that put you off. Glass Rose is a very intellectual game that sets players in a deep mystery as a Japanese investigative reporter. That reporter is Takeshi Kagetani, who is literally taken back to the 1920s, to a mansion at the time several homicides have taken place. It's an unsolved case, and it's your task to experience the proceedings first-hand and solve the mystery for yourself.

Though Glass Rose may appear at first to be nothing more than a series of random point-and-clicks, gameplay does become a little more complex and involving as you progress. True, you'll be charged with the task of looking for clues and difficult-to-find items, but you'll also meet with non-playable characters that will sometimes offer clues. However, some won't be quite as forthcoming, and it's here that you get to implement a new mind reading system. Here, players are given a number of 'Mind' points that can be used, not surprisingly, to read the minds of characters in order to gain hints. But - and it's a big but - should you waste them and deplete your meter to zero, you'll effectively die and return to the beginning of the area or scene. The trick is to know who to use them on.

So it's basically your average point-and-click adventure with a few gameplay twists thrown in for good measure. It's not exactly Street Fighter or Viewtiful Joe, but it makes a refreshing change from the norm.
