Summary

Perhaps with the exception of EA’s own basketball series, Acclaim’s NBA Jam is one of the biggest and most memorable basketball series to hit the games industry, dating all the way back to the 16-bit era on SNES and MegaDrive. It was famed for being an outrageous basketball game, boasting players with almost super hero-like abilities. In fact the series is still going strong today, and Acclaim has now unleashed the next in the series, built from the ground up, for PlayStation 2.

Forgetting about super-human powers for a moment, it’s worth mentioning that NBA Jam is one of the most in-depth basketball games we’ve come across. It pits players not just in a game of modern day basketball, but in historic basketball as well, spanning more than 50 years. NBA Jam features legends such as Magic Johnson, Julius Irving and Larry Bird, and even comes complete with era-specific uniforms and hairstyles.

But NBA Jam is a game where you’ll be able to jump higher than humanly possible and shoot flaming basketballs through hoops. The laws of physics don’t always apply here - you need to forget about them and take leaps of faith to claim victory. It’s still a superbly executed basketball game, but it’s light-hearted and a lot of fun. Exhibition and Tournament modes as well as a series of mini games help to make the game a little more extensive, but it’s a game that will keep players coming back for months regardless. Maybe even years.

NBA Jam is visually impressive too, with solid environments, brilliantly animated players, and some spectacular effects.

It’s more of the same - but a whole lot more too!
