Summary

It had to happen. The world domination simulator is here in the shape of Evil Genius. All the everyday tasks of a Dr. Evil-cum-Bond villain-type mastermind are available to experience and master, from building your secret base to developing spectacular super-weapons to carry out your nefarious deeds.

At the beginning of the game, you are presented with what we call the Bad Man's Starter Kit: you have an outdoor strong room, three construction workers, a henchman and a modest amount of solid gold. Your first priority is to start to carve your base into the mountain. There are two main resources that you must manipulate to be a truly successful Evil Genius: cash and notoriety. Only by amassing large enough quantities of both these resources will you be able to construct your lair, devise a devilish masterplan, and force the world into acknowledging your superiority. Obtaining funds is a simple matter of sending your minions across the globe, via the world domination screen, and ordering them to steal cash. Running out of cash does not mean the end of your reign, but you will find many tasks difficult to carry out with no healthy cashflow. Protecting your operation will be next to impossible. Cash is needed to build new rooms and objects, and also to get hold of new construction workers if they are needed. As well as gathering as much money as possible, notoriety is paramount. This is primarily increased through completing Acts of Infamy. Make your presence felt in the world, and the resulting media coverage will increase your global notoriety levels, unlocking even more evil opportunities.

The recruitment of unquestioningly faithful minions is essential. Training these lackeys in heavy weapons usage and all manner of subterfuge is a must, along with the presence of intimidating henchmen; these lumbering no-goodniks patrol and protect your base, take out your enemies, and embark on the missions that will make you (in)famous.

Evil Genius is a nice twist on the role-playing/megalomaniac management/strategy genre(s) with a lighthearted touch belying its title and 12+ PEGI rating. A lot of fun to play, but don't take it too seriously, eh?
