Wrath Unleashed - Xbox

The concept of the combat game just reached new heights with regard to sheer scale upon the release of this latest brutal action game from LucasArts. As the title suggests, the wrath is most certainly unleashed - that being the wrath of the gods - with the game bringing a host of mythological creatures to life to do battle amidst a deadly fantasy world.

The game sees powerful beings called Overlords fight for supremacy as they struggle to become gods, maintain dominance and battle for control of magical floating islands. As such, players can control four of these deadly Overlords, along with more than 25 of their wild and fearsome minions, such as dragons, centaurs, unicorns, and juggernauts. Influenced by popular mythology, both Overlords and creatures have unique manifestations, design twists and magical abilities, and also belong to one of the game's four realms - Dark Chaos, Light Chaos, Dark Order and Light Order.

As you wage war across the vast battlefield of the game's world map, you battle to control islands and capture temples, which are capable of providing you with magical ethereal energy - or 'mana'. Once you've acquired the mana, you can then use it to cast spells and thus provide a competitive advantage over an opponent.

When two opponents clash for domination of the same area, the game undergoes a transition to an arena view, in which the game's one-on-one battles occur. This is where the real action begins, as you're thrust into large-scale arena-style combat and full 3D control of characters is enabled. Here, creatures wield magic, weapons and use teeth and claws to defeat enemies in vicious close and long-range attacks. You must be wary of the land itself, as it can strike out with powerful storms, fatal floods, erupting volcanoes or deadly earthquakes.

Wrath Unleashed combines big, loud, grisly combat with elements of typical strategy gaming to deliver quite a novel experience that should go down well with fans of both genres.
