Summary

Ever since we were first given the opportunity to get our mitts on the real handlebars of Sega's classic arcade hit Enduro Racer, the prospect of burning up the dirt on a motocross bike has always gone down well with gamers. Obviously, a simple five round arcade romp is not enough these days - we demand more. Which is why this latest racer from Acclaim not only recreates the action of extreme motocross, but allows players to experience the lifestyle of the stars of the sport too.

More specifically, SX Superstar casts you as the star and requires that you take your chosen rider on a rags-to-riches style career, whilst focusing on the lifestyle aspect of professional supercross. As you progress through the game, leaving the competition for dust, you soon begin to reap the benefits in the form of cash. And as we all know, big bucks means posh houses, hot chicks and, in this case, better bikes.

The main gameplay element, though, is the racing itself, and it appears in the form of some rather frantic arcade biking action. The controls are easy to master, having a, intuitive, pick-up-and-play feel to them - so it won't be long until you're mastering the game's myriad stunts, grabbing big air and combo-ing your way to glory.

There are a total of 24 selectable riders to choose from, each complete with their own unique style and attitude. As far as courses are concerned, you can race across 20 detailed tracks, set in various locales around the world or, alternatively, create your own customised circuit via the game's extensive track editor, which features over 100 interchangeable pieces and six arenas.

With a fairly impressive AI system, up to eight riders can battle it out on screen at once, so, unless you get left behind, the action remains pretty fierce throughout. And you certainly don't want to get left behind, as this game is all about raking in the big bucks and living the high life. Now if this isn't extreme escapism, we don't know what is!
