Summary

Now an established series on GameCube, the Disney Sports games, developed in conjunction with Konami, have proved that official licenses and complex gameplay doesn’t necessarily make a good sports game. Another fine example of this is Disney’s latest offering, Disney Sports Basketball for GameCube.

First and foremost, the Disney brand is what will attract younger audiences to these sports games and the Basketball incarnation comes with a complete cast of well-known Disney faces including Mickey, Goofy and Donald Duck, all of which makes for a bright, colourful and fun game.

But it’s still a Basketball game, and if it doesn’t play well, it’s not a good game. Thankfully this is not an issue for Disney Sports Basketball. In fact it’s the game’s simplicity and lack of controls that is its greatest strength. There’s a stick for movement, and buttons for passes and shots. They are the basics, but it’s all you need for a competitive game of basketball. The game is typically played on a 3-on-3 basis and doesn’t confuse younger players by placing too many athletes on screen. Game modes include Exhibition, Season and All Star game and there’s also the obligatory multi-player mode too, accommodating up to four players simultaneously.

From a visual standpoint, Disney Sports Basketball is unlike other games in the genre. This game has flair, is brightly lit and boasts some wonderfully colourful environments. Characters move fluidly and behave very much as they would in a cartoon. Disney Sports Basketball is clearly geared towards younger players, but it’s a game everyone can play and enjoy, and for that, it’s well worth a few hours of anyone’s time.
