Summary

Tim Burton's movie version of Planet of the Apes made a big impact at the cinemas in 2001. Any film with Helena Bonham-Carter is worth a look, even the Merchant-Ivory stuff, but our English Rose made up as a monkey? This I gotta see! As with most big movies these days, the video game is surely hot on its heels. Fuelling the primate phenomenon, Ubi Soft has released Planet of the Apes for Game Boy Color.

After crash landing on an alien Earth, 200 years into the future, you discover a disturbing reality. Apes are the superior species and have assumed control of your home planet. Playing as Ulysses, you must fight for humanity and save your fellow survivors from the hairiest form of intelligence on the planet. You will have to use all your skill as you infiltrate guarded buildings and confront renegade baboons. Feel up to it?

The ideas behind the gameplay in Planet of the Apes are very similar to the film. You must join forces with friendly apes that include Dr Zaius, Zira and Cornelius as you battle for freedom against a plethora of primate nasties. This is essentially a platform game in which you must adopt stealth strategies as well summoning the strength within yourself to overcome the opposition. Your journey will become progressively more challenging and take place across familiar locations such as Ape City, research labs and military bases.

Although visually less impressive than its Advance counterpart, the Game Boy Color version is technically just as accomplished. Character animation is fluid and the controls are simple. You know, kick, punch, jump and all that.

This easily accessible game is simple to learn but challenging to master, proving that there's life in the old (Game) Boy yet.
