Summary

So what if the fast and exciting world of high-octane competitive racing has you completely addicted and you long for the chance to race in the highest ranks of motorsport? If you own a PlayStation and the majority of your games collection involves some kind of engine, Formula Nippon is your kind of game. Deviating from the standard approach to Formula 1 games, Formula Nippon lets you start your racing career in the Karting leagues, then you move into Formula 3000 and finally you can take part in the Japanese championship.

Formula Nippon has several game modes including simulation, arcade, time trial and two-player racing. The arcade mode is easier, with less realistic physics and handling, but it's a good mode for learning the courses and practising your skills. In arcade mode you can select either Karting, Formula 3000 or Formula Nippon and dive straight into the action. The simulation mode is noticeably trickier, but ultimately more rewarding when you finally get it right. It's in the simulation mode where you work your way up through the ranks and can become the Nippon champion.

Even though it has a unique approach to racing, Formula Nippon is a decidedly average racing game. Its graphics are a little on the bland and uninteresting side and the gameplay is bettered by other racing games. It is not the worst game around, not by a long shot, but by the same token, it's far from refining the racing genre as we know it. Definitely a game to rent before buying.
