Summary

The Game Boy Color’s technical limitations obviously mean that any game produced on the platform is going to look like something developed in the eighties. Cast your mind back and think of 720 Degrees; an early isometric skateboarding game. Dave Mirra’s Freestyle BMX bares striking similarities to this classic, and brings the genre into the 21st century on Game Boy Color with a vengeance, not to mention some classic old-style gameplay.

After a stunningly short, but equally spectacular introduction, players will be brought back down to reality once they begin the game proper. While Mirra’s BMX is a simple game, there are a number of options present that give players plenty of motive to play. To begin with, you are only able to access one of the four available BMX bikes, and only two of the eight street-circuits in the game. To unlock the features of the game you must fulfil the requirements of each of the challenges, most of which comprise of collecting a specified number of items within a limited time. As you progress, you will earn medals, that in turn will unlock more secrets. Your challenges will take you from heavily wooded areas to litter ridden playgrounds.

There is a lot to do here, especially when you consider the simple nature of the game, and with twenty tricks to pull off, the challenge of Mirra’s BMX is increased even further.
