Summary

Soul Reaver is back and this time it’s on the PlayStation 2, if you liked the first instalment wait until you see the difference an extra 96 bits of processing power makes. The Soul Reaver universe comes to life in an incredibly detailed way. Soul Reaver 2 is dark and twisted, think of an evil version of Tomb Raider.

At the end of the first game, Raziel, our hero, plunged through the Chronoplast time portal in his relentless search of Kain. Throughout his bizarre journey through time Raziel must uncover the mysteries of the mysteries of Nosgoth’s ancient races and expose the corruption behind the machinations behind the corruption of the pillars and the vampire genocide.

The gameplay mechanics of the original Soul Reaver return for the sequel, Raziel can use all of his abilities that he learned from the first game from the outset and he already possesses the Soul Reaver sword. Climbing, swimming, and soul-devouring are no problem for our seasoned veteran. Raziel has more than 30 new abilities for this sequel. One of the best features of Soul Reaver is Raziel’s ability to shift from the material plane to the physical plane.

The plane shifting adds an interesting element to the puzzle solving of Soul Reaver 2. The game world is different in both planes, so sometimes you have to swap between each realm to reach certain inaccessible parts of the levels. Soul Reaver 2 has a refined balance of puzzle solving, exploration and action.

New elemental forges such as Dark, Spirit, Light, and Air allow Raziel to interact with the environments in previously unavailable ways. There have also been improvements to the combat system and there is a greater number of enemies to battle.

Soul Reaver was a good game on the PlayStation, Soul Reaver 2 is a lot better.
