The first pool game for the PlayStation 2 is finally with us, and what a fantastic simulation it is. Introducing Pool Master, published by Take 2 Interactive. If fancy a quick game of pool you can now do so from the comfort of your own living room. It comes as no surprise that this game looks so good seeing as it is being run on such powerful hardware. But, it comes as a nice surprise to realise that it plays just as well as it looks.
Included in Pool Master are several variations to the popular sport, included 9-Ball (both sets of rules), Bowlliard (a combination of pool and bowling) 8-ball and rotation. Bowlliard is a fun game that scores points in similar fashion to bowling, great for two-players that can make a decent run of points. The rest of the game modes vary the rules and number of balls on the table.
If you are unsure of how to play pool there are many tutorial sessions that will teach you everything from the basics to the more advanced techniques such as masse and jumpshots. The aiming session is particularly useful and all techniques can be used in real life.
One of the reasons why this is such a good game is its use of the pressure sensitive controller of the PlayStation 2. Almost every button on the pad responds to varying degrees of pressure, even the D-pad. For example, if you are applying side to the cue ball, if you touch the pad gently it only moves a bit, whereas being firm moves the cursor quickly. Gauging the power of your shots is also a joy, you can use the analogue stick to move a meter to the desired amount.
