Some nice things go together well. Bacon and eggs for instance or two other nice things that would make a good clichéd couple. Some nice things really dont, like brushing your teeth and drinking orange juice. SNK Vs Capcom is many peoples idea of fantasy 2D beat-em-up gaming and when the title was announced for arcade and Dreamcast, there was a mini-global party at the prospect. Then the fear set in. What if the game was rubbish? Ten years of anticipation would have come to nothing.
So folks, the game is... a beauty! Hooray! Well, mostly. On the up side there are over twenty-five fighters from such classic games as Streetfighter Alpha 3 and the King of Fighters series. Another way of saying this would be that the game features characters from only these titles, meaning the game could have been more accurately called Streetfighter Alpha 3 Vs King of Fighters.
This aside, the game plays extremely well with the characters retaining their original feel when in use. By this we mean they handle in the same as they did in their initial incarnations with move and hit priority behaving as you would expect.
To justify producing so many 2D beat-em-up titles that, to the untrained eye appear very much the same, Capcom endeavours to tweak each release to the point at which it becomes unique and manages it very well. There are several never before seen features like the SNK groove system. This allows the KOF characters to vary the style of Super they employ. This can be either a charge-up of power to be release during the bout, or saved to when the energy bar is depleted goes red, allowing all the power to be released in a final desperation Super. If you were quick on your toes last year you may have been one of the lucky punters to have got your hands on one of the few Neo Geo Pocket Colors that made it to our shores and a copy of SNK Vs Capcom Match of the Millennium. This will happily link up the Dreamcast version allowing data transfer between the hand held and the VMU of the Dreamcast. Cool eh?
