Summary
Heavy Metal in more ways than one. Destruction Derby Raw does just what it says on the tin, to a soundtrack of bludgeoning rock music and crunching steel. Honestly, the legend ‘Play Loud’ should be inscribed on the disc itself. ‘Tis a veritable cacophony of carnage, and it rocks a large one, so don your finest mullet and dodgy ‘tache and prepare to whoop and holler as you leave a trail of devastation in your wake.
Destruction Derby Raw is the third in the DD series and, while it’s predecessors were hardly poor games, this title does seem to prove the old adage ‘third times the charm’. The premise is pretty much the same as before, the title is a giveaway after all, but the gameplay has improved, and graphically it’s very good-looking.
As you progress, you’ll discover 25 different tracks to race in several modes: the classic Destruction mode is present and correct, of course, but also included are Pass The Bomb (self-explanatory), Smash For Cash (a last man standing scenario), Assault (go on, have a guess), and, joy of joys, Skyscraper. This really is the clincher with Destruction Derby Raw. Take a spin around the top of a tall building, while trying to knock opposing cars into the street below. Try too hard and you might find yourself plunging pavement-wards of your own volition. This mode is equal parts exhilarating and frustrating, simply because you have to pose as much of a threat to the other cars in as short a time as possible, while trying to preserve yourself. Believe me, your time at the top of the skyscraper can be very short indeed.
Destruction Derby Raw is a real tonic for those who may have tired of the hyper-realism of certain driving titles, but being reckless at the wheel of your muscle car is not enough. There has to be method to your madness. Worry not, after suffering a few teeth-rattling collisions on your first few outings, you’ll soon become the master of destruction.
