Summary

Rayman’s life is turned upside down when the evil Mr. Dark turns up and decides to imprison the ‘toons’, the precious light-giving sprites of the land. Mr. Dark wants to steal the ‘toons’ energy, which will throw the world into darkness and chaos.

Rayman is a two-dimensional side-on platform game for the Gameboy Color. But what a platformer! We didn’t think that graphics of this quality could be displayed on the Gameboy. The use of colours is dazzling and the levels become eye-candy. The graphics create a rich, vibrant world that you want to be a part of and get lost in. The music is also well done considering the limited audio capabilities of the Gameboy. The levels are well thought out and sometimes tricky, but with practice you’ll soon get the hang of things.

Each new level has new ideas that are implemented well. For example, some of the enemies in the game have little trumpets that they use to blow you around the screen. In order to make progress you need to use these enemies in combination with a few jumps to make it to the end of the level.

Rayman is a very challenging game that will take some time to make your way through, so expect to return to it again and again.
