Summary

Bomberman is one of those video games series that has aged gracefully thanks to a core gameplay that just works and a willingness among its stewards to stick with what works (nobody wants the grim 'n' gritty post-apocalyptic Bomberman FPS).

In Super Bomberman R the heart of the game is the same as it's ever been - players race around a grid strategically deploying bombs to wipe their opponents off the face of the map. Of course, with this being a current generation game it all looks a lot shinier than it used to, but at its heart Bomberman is the same as it's ever been.

In fact, Super Bomberman R is arguably closer to the series roots than a series entry has been for years. The hyper power-ups of recent years are absent, as are the Louies - kangaroo mounts that have been around since 1994. It's a throwback to when the game was perhaps at its peak, when four players would huddle round a single SNES and gleefully obliterate each other. Up to four players can vapourise each other locally, or up to eight can knock each other around the map online in Battle Mode. Even story mode comes with a multiplayer option with the option to bring in a pal as you battle through 50 levels littered with joyfully complex bosses.
