Summary

Midway’s 1980’s classic makes a welcome return to the latest generation of gaming platforms, delivering the same doses of spy-chasing, shoot-‘em up action but now in a fully rendered 3D environment.

With a host of high-tech weaponry and a sleek new vehicle at their disposal, players endeavour to save the world across 14 levels, in a variety of exotic worldwide locations. Dubbed the ‘ultimate counter-intelligence prototype vehicle’, the G-6155 Interceptor has the ability to morph into high-velocity speedboat, a turbo jet watercraft and a super-charged motorcycle – extremely helpful manoeuvres in the fight against crime.
As with the original game, weapons vans appear throughout the levels, onto which the player can drive in order to repair the vehicle and stock up on his/her arsenal.

Levels are mission-based, having different objectives that need to be completed. The levels span some of the most beautiful locations from around the world, such as Key West and Venice. Midway actually travelled to these locations to take photographs of the scenery to use as textures in the game. The use of photo-realistic texturing gives Spy Hunter a unique look and the game engine is accomplished enough to process these at high speeds.

Spy Hunter is the original driving shoot-‘em-up, from a time when playability was of utmost importance. Now featuring an aesthetic makeover and, exclusively to Xbox, inclusion of the original game, Spy Hunter is definitely worth a look.
