Following the success of the original Sudden Strike and its expansion pack, Sudden Strike Forever, CDV treat us to a limited edition bundle, complete with game, T-shirt and a much-needed official strategy guide. Ooh, nice.
The subject of World War 2 is sometimes still, despite the intervening years, an unhappy discussion point, and even to this day, still has its sensitive points. Now that the countries of Europe have learned to live peacefully (more or less) with one another, approaching the subject is somewhat easier. Only recently have developers within the video games industry dared to delve into simulators that involve the 50-year-old war against the Germans. The likes of Medal Of Honour proved to be popular, at least in countries other than Germany. Sudden Strike and Sudden Strike Forever are the latest appearances in the genre, also set in World War 2.
Technically, Sudden Strike is something of an achievement. The games environments are fully interactive, and allow the animated destruction of any on-screen object within the 2D playing area. Also, the number of on-screen units is immense. Its possible to see as many as 1,000 of your troops battling simultaneously. Using these environments, you are able to tackle a large number of single player missions and intensive campaign missions. Multi-player over the Internet allows up to twelve players to participate in what turns out to be a highly strategic, informative playing experience.
