Summary

Interplay, world-renowned developers of many A-list titles, has once again increased the bulge in their portfolio with the release of Fallout Tactics. Based around the award-winning Fallout universe, this new tactically focused game looks set to kick the series into another dimension as far as enjoyment in gameplay is concerned.

Post-nuclear war, your task is to survive on the radiated planet by whatever means necessary. This formidable challenge includes a survival horror approach, meaning you have to mercilessly destroy all threats within your home environment, Planet Earth.

While essentially a real-time strategy game, Fallout does employ certain role-playing aspects into the gameplay mechanics. Typical role-playing features such as Hit Points and the dreaded random encounters are present and in full force. In each of the twenty or so missions set across six areas that include snow covered military hideouts and fallen skyscrapers, you will find yourself encountering formidable opponents such as mutated humans and animals. A bestiary of 45 ‘monster types’ has been produced for this epic game. Interestingly, turn-based encounters can turned on or off, a feature lacking in any existing role-playing game. To get around such large environments, you are able to use many game vehicles that are fully controllable and a valuable asset to the game. Fallout’s multi-player option is what makes the game shine. Available over a LAN, five popular game modes have been employed, including Death Match and Capture the Flag.

As the latest, most complete and polished title in the series, Fallout Tactics is far superior to anything released prior to this masterpiece. Well worth it.
